Running the full marathon in 17 weeks.Training starts Sat.Tipping the scales at 14stone of cheese red wine and turkey .Usually sit around 86kg and at the min a five mile run i would be fecked.Soon drop off.Stopped doing weights months ago.Back to Imma just Wednesdays for cardio then Sportshut Thur nights for wee kickabout but might have to knock this on the head as suffered through injuries past year on it with the surface(achilles heel). So only for running twice threw the week and train with rest of guys getting ready for this marathon every Sat.Obviously up the anti closer to the time. After 9weeks we will be asked to run a half marathon.Any of you's ever done it..how hard was it how long did you train and any tips.Bucket list thing i always said i would do and for a good cause to raise money

i done it last year with a few mates, think we done 15 week training plan, going from 6 miles up to 18, shorter 6/8 milers during week and a longer runs on sundays. it was hard as we were still playing on sats and you picked up injuries. also you get slower for football as its all long , one pace running, hard on the joints too. was glad i done it but never again! do a half marathon first as that is good prac, good luck.

Plan was a relay but know it wouldnt be a challenge just a money raiser. So wanna do both as if i did a relay i would end up wanting to do the full thing next year and would eat away at me not doing it first place.Fella did that 24hr football thing with me did 1 and say's he thought the 24hr thing was mentally tougher and i should do it as i can get fit pretty quick when i put me mind on something. Not getting any younger so 34 this year so think timing is perfect.Get this ticked off the bucket list it's a parachute jump and Mount Kilimanjaro next :-)although not this year.

Good luck big lad. Not easy, especially if you were doing the weight training and mma stuff. very different sort of fitness. I went through a phase a few years ago and got a bit of the weight off me and done one of the relays. great craic and you'll get plenty of support from the good folk of belfast. hardest part is up the antrim road and around duncrue as there's nobody there to cheer you on. i'd love to do the full thing at some point but want the weight off to try and play football before i go for the running. think i'd do the dublin marathon though as it's at the end of october so the training would be in better weather. if you're doing the training, knock the football on the head as it only takes one eejit to hit you late and you're out of it, especially if you're doing it for charity. Here's a good link for training. There's various options depending on your fitness and experience. Essentially your training should be 16-20 weeks and you'll gradually build up your miles every week until about 2-3 weeks before the race and at that stage you start to slow down again to save yourself for the big day. www.halhigdon.com/training/51135/Marathon-Training-Guide

Good luck Carew.
Are you doing it with Scott, saw him posting on facebook the other day?
I done 7 miles of it last year up Cavehill/Zoo area, tougher than i expected as i done no training outside football for it. Not sure if i'd enjoy the full 26 miles, would get while bored.
For the 7 miles i picked people out in the crowd to pass and kept it going that way, doubt i could do that for the 26 ;D

Cheers maccers.Well don't kick anymore just go down to sports hut for football training.Mma is just cardio as in shadow boxing hindu squats situps etc plus other stuff like technique pads etc and bit of rolling at the end so it will be ok wont be sparring Sat to avoid injury. So its basically 3-4 days a week of running.Dale Gordan from Rovers is doing it way me so we can do our bit midweek and yeah Jonny every Sat Scott McGarry is taking a group out.Spoke to next door neighbour about it since this post and he thinks i can do it.He's 48 and did it two years ago.Like i say i can drop weight no sweat can cut from 86 to 77kg in 2weeks in past with kickboxing and mma fights so no stranger how to spend 4-8weeks off drink and train hard cut weight and prepare the body to the big day but as you say this is a lot different than that though. You don't try you don't find out and i love a challenge :-)

Definitely gonna do a marathon in the near future.
I do a fair bit of running but normally just 4 mile maximum distance, I recently upped it one night and done 6 mile and I can tell you I felt it the next few days ;D
Training for this would be very tough mentality and physically I'd say.

Just about to go for a wee four mile job now.Did 3mile and 2 mile on the bike last night as a wee break in.Tough on me for a fella way near 2 bottles of red wine in him a cheeseboard and a selection box whilst watching the darts 24hrs before lol was actually mildly stiff this morn.On pasta fish etc now.I usually run 4-5mile although up the back of Gallachers is the hill of death to Ahoghill so far from flat miles. Most i have run is near 9 thats Ahoghill to train station and back was about 6years ago though way the traffic going by you cant take the sneeky 1min walk breaks like the back roads lol.Dear knows in pre season session what is clocked up when its all running sprints and took in.Prob shock yourself how many it is.Went splashed out new runners ,shorts, tops, sweatband ;-) and wristbands :-)and glucosamine and chondroitin/protein! .I look like Bryan Clay!!.Save me a fortune on diesel visiting folk :-)

Lol...I mind the first time I went out the Ecos with you a couple of weeks after my op. Done the first part all round the Ecos bit and kept up well, all pleased with mesel...until we hit the hill up the side of the keel and auld curly baws decided to step it up a gear...I'd never done the Ecos Run course before and lost him at the bridge behind the astro and had no idea where the finish line was haha! That was before pre season even started though!

Never knew picking the right footwear was so hard(shape of foot etc)well saying I am a virgin at this.Ends up them things i thought i grabbed a bargain way in sports direct were a heap of s**t.Knew last nite and was carefull to use treadmill and not go straight outdoors to see how they really felt, was like something sticking inside me left hand foot not sore but uncomfortable, next night same thing so getting em changed way receipt today not a mark on em trying em out this way.Googled and read a few answers to the THIS question.Whats the best shoes for marathon training and for a beginner and not over the top in price.Ends up folk go real in depth on this s**t.I always was told you can't go wrong with Asics, New Balance by friends and Sports Direct staff. But these in depth experience runners really let ya know your running shoe!!!.After reading about near 2hrs of reviews finally got these orered online £100 down to £50 Wave Precision 12.I feel i can not only run this marathon there's a good chance i could win it never mind going past Mr Elliott ;-)just hope i don't get a speedy ticket when these bad boys arrive cos peelers always stopping at Galgorm :-)

Supposedly you should get a few decent pairs of proper running socks too, the good ones fully cushion your feet in the right areas (that's why football socks now have L and R on them)

Getting the miles clocked up now but fek this road running is tough on the knees.Already developed runners knee and had to order an IT compression band to kill the pain only traing 2blamin weeks, never felt this on grass etc. When i get to 6-7miles it gets sore to the point i have to stop :-(still plenty in the tank but pain is nightmare.Anyone suffered runners knee? i picked it up waiting on the right trainers to come off the internet by using s**t one's.Real c**t have the pain outside of kneecap .Feel nothing after mild pain going up stairs thats it not bending knee or anything. After 3-4mile i feel it then its a shooting pain down me leg rest of run. This band should come in post tomorrow hope its me saviour.Doesnt work its a relay for me lol most i have run so far is 9mile ..
