It is 77 years today since John Thompson died during the Old Firm Derby at Ibrox park. John was Celtic's goal keeper and also the Scotland international keeper who died after a collision with Rangers striker Sam English. He was 22 years old!!
Just thought I'd give him a wee mention as it's one of the true sad stories of Celtic and Scotlands football history.
Also to add to that, the memory of Sam English who never recovered or got over the death. He was only 23 and had just signed for Rangers playing his 7th game and first Old Firm Derby. Many many people blamed him for the accident and some suggested he deliberatly kicked John in the head. Personnally having seen the video it's clear to see that he was going for the ball as was Celtic's great and brave keeper John. John dived at Sams' feet and it was a knee to the side of the head in the collision which caused his tragic death.
English never recovered or got over the accident which forced him to quit the game at only 28 years of age.
RIP John Thompson, a true Celtic Hero and also Sam English who was also a victum 77 years ago today!!! Never fogotten..
