Waveney 4-3 Sky Blues D Houston, D Quigley, D Semple, A match we bossed for most of the game,we had good attacking play scored three good goals ,but when you defend as bad as we did on Saturday, then you deserve nothing from the game ,but credit to Waveney who battled hard are well organised and took there chances when they came and good luck to them in the next round

shocked at this result and thats not being disrespectful to Waveney. But it shows that the standard in the second is not too far from the first. Glenarm beating Broadway as well. I know we got beat but we gave Penarol a bloody good game. Only one Randalstown team left in this competition. Come on the Reds ;D

Not sure how you can compare the standard of the 1st against the second accurately Bremner though I know what you're trying to say. If you look at the 3 teams who got promoted from the 2nd last year (and this might not be entirely accuarate) it seems that only Randalstown Reds are holding they're own. Connor and Galgorm seem to be struggling and last season Masserene went up (did they win the second?) and struggled as well. I think the top teams in the first would beat most teams from the rest of the leagues most Saturdays but the top teams in the 2nd would probably hold their own in the first. You seem to have assembled a good sqaud with Athletic and results would suggest you'd do alright in the 1st. Then there's so many transfers among teams in the divisions that it ends up a few teams have a few really good players and the rest might be average and no-one really dominates the division. Its only an observation from a bystander.

But then of course its going to be difficult. I know any team can raise their game for a big cup match and many times an upset has happened. But this year just appears that no-one in the first are domanating, well except Thistle, but we beat them ;D. I just get the feeling (and its only my opinion) that the standard has dropped slightly and the standard of the second has raised slightly. Not for one minute am I saying that we would find it easy in the first, I'm not, but I would have no real fear playing any team. Last year I would have been s**tting myself if we had a cup match with Penarol, this year I thought we could have won the match. Its all fun Just for the record both 2nd division winners prior to the reds, came up and won the 1st division title the next year. That being Penarol in 04 and Castletown in 05

Good point on the Casteltown/Penerol winning the league after promotion. I'd forgotten about that. In general though most teams who get promoted to a higher division seem to struggle slightly at first. I hope I'm not offending any Lisnafillon boys (Simon!!) by saying that they've found the 2nd a little more difficult than the 3rd and they were one of the better teams in the 3rd. There's a bit of swings and roundabouts involved as well where the year Penerol won the first then a few players left and it weakens their team and the join another team so obviously strenghtening theirs. The standard of football in Northern Ireland in general is poor. Take the top 3 out of the Irish league and the rest are pretty ordinary. I'm sure the standard was better in the BSML when you were playing Bremner though football has changed a bit since then in that the game is more athletic now ;D
