The former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton midfielder was found hanged at his home in Chester this morning.
Police say there are no supsicious circumstances surrounding the 42-year-old's death.
The Football Association of Wales confirmed the news, saying that Speed's family had authorised the release of the information.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am this morning, sunday 27 November, police were informed of an incident at Aldford Road, Huntington. Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and next of kind have been informed." The spokesman added that man was found hanged.

Crazy...he was doing a great job with the Welsh national team also, and said only a few weeks ago that he cant wait until the world cup qualifiers start...one only knows what was going on behind closed doors...gutting news  |

Shocking...was listening to 909 on the way up to Belfast when they broke the news. There are reporting that its suicide apparently. Unbelievable, premiership and Welsh legend.

Unbelievable news. Heard going into the ground today couldn't and still can't get my head round it. There was an announcement that there was to be a silence for brad Jones young lad the ground broke into spontaneous applause led by the city fans. Same thing happend when it was announced about Gary speed. Then an impeccably observed silence.
God help both those poor families.

If this is true i really hope the paper suffers. Who really cares what he does in his private life.
