I wonder if anyone can name the first BMSL team to play in a Junior Shield final. 5 points extra for each player you name who played that day. 50 point bonus if you can name the oposition.

Rathenraw did get into the first final however they were a very good team within a very good league at that time. That scummy team as you state would walk that 1st division at present. TheOne, you make a rash statement when you cant name any of the players.

talking of rash statements, I don't think that old team would contest for the league.
As for naming any players, I presume that you played since you started the topic!!

Indeed the Rathenraw team that reached the final that year were a good team, yet i remember playing against them that year and that they also finished well down the league that year. Hard to judge teams from the past with the present.

Firstly TheOne, this part of the site is as per the above statment so it is irrelevent if I played or not. You make a derogatory remark about that team but you can't name any of the players....... I think that just ignorant. Ady, my point does state that it was a very good league at that time. A skyblues team with a young Dessie Winter, a young Harris Talbot and of course a very young Ady Patton was also a vary good team and would probably contest for the current top spot of the current league. For the record, you are correct Rathenraw did finish mid table that year however they did reach the last 16 of the junior cup that year and 3 cup semi finals, plus getting to the final of the shield, the squad had no real strength to cope with all the games. However the first eleven would be very very strong in the current 1st division. TheOne.... who did you play for

That will be 6 points to me I think then.....
Ady you seem to be a knowledgable guy..can you name any more.
Bremner you seem to be stuck in yesteryear trying to say that those teams are better than the ones today. Is that cause your to old and have to hold on to those memories??
btw...maybe I didn't or don't play for anyone

Well i know (or think) Castletown was the 1st BSML team to lift the shield back in 1992-93 season, and they played Raceview in the semi`s that year. Great final too at Carrick, 2-0 down and came back to win 3-2 in extra-time. And of course Raceview won the shield couple of season ago and a few other teams have got as far as the semi`s aswell i think. As for the Junior Cup won by BSML teams i dont think there has been one. (somebody correct me if im wrong). Although i know as i played in them, the Skyblues lost in 2 semi finals and are currently in the quarters this season, anyone else know more?

TheOne, this site is all about opinions, you are entitled to yours however being rude is not an opinion or is polite.
Therefore it is my opinion that generally the current quality of the players playing in the league are not as good as the players 10 or even 15 years ago.
But that Rathenraw team was a very good team
Ady, the late great Dublin Road Select reached back to back quarter finals of the shield ....... thats their only claim to fame
;D ;D

TheOne, i used to play with Bremner and see them rules he has at the bottom of his posts, he believed in them even then, ask any ref!! ;D ;D ;D
Go Stevie son ;D ;D ;D
Ah yes, think i mind watching them take on Wakehurst one of those times i think.

Excellent Ady, you made me laugh ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D You are correct, Wakehurst won 2-1 and went to the final and the other was Lisburn Rangers who also won 2-1 and too went to the final that year. The auld memory is good Ady for an old man

Bremner do you wanna borrow my hanky to wipe your eyes or a dummy to stop you crying?
Ady you are correct in saying that no BSML team has won the Junior Cup. I know this not through knowledge but instead I looked it up in the IFA website.

WiseOne....... Mo Devine and Loafy did not play in the final.
The goalkeeper was from Ballymena and the other player was arguably the best player in the team

Ady, Peppers surname was Gourley......so its Pepper Gourley ;D I think it was Paul and yes he did score the winner in the final for Castletown.
TheOne, you are correct with Seamus Duffy..... brilliant player, ex Ballymena Utd of course.
Pavel, from what I hear from my contact within the Reds, you are not even good enough to clean Ady's boots. ;D ;D
Only kidding...............

wiseone, i would'nt disagree with you about the full backs.... ;D
Did you play in this league at any time?

Post by wiseone on Mar 1, 2005 14:46:15 GMT
Used to play on the wing for a very good side I think the two fullbacks were S Irvine (Steksy) and G McAuley, used to love skinning them I think the boy McAuley is still around yet not sure about the boy Irvine, If both could have played as well as they could slaber they would have been up to the same standard as the rest of the team

Yes Ady I think he did although the latter years of his career were dogged by a serious knee injury. A damn fine player in his day though, he knew where the old onion bag was!
