Cliftonville are to play Celtic in a friendly to mark the 130th anniversy of the club. Happy days. Im sure a few from here will go along. I defo will. I'll be a red that night. from cliftonvillefc.net www.cliftonvillefc.net/news_f...ws_200809.htmlThursday, August 20, 2009 Cliftonville Football Club are delighted to announce a special Exhibition Challenge match against Celtic as part of our 130th Anniversary Celebrations this season. No date has yet been set for the fixture and it is anticipated that such details will be finalised once Celtic's European schedule has been determined. The Club would like to pay tribute to everyone whose hard work behind the scenes has made the occasion possible, including Manager Eddie Patterson. Confirming the fixture, proud Chairman Gerard Lawlor explained: "This is something that we can all look forward to and I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to secure one of the world's biggest Football Clubs to officially open our new stand and facilities at Solitude. "A lot of people have put so much effort into ensuring that the game will take place and special credit must be paid to Eddie Patterson for his endeavours in helping bring Celtic to Solitude. "I must also pass on my thanks to the Association of Celtic Supporters' Clubs whose assistance was vital and I hope that everyone associated with Cliftonville Football Club enjoys every second of what I have no doubt will be a fantastic occasion." Bossman Patterson, who has led his team into European encounters against Latvian, Belgian and Danish opposition over the last couple of years, admits it will be a whole new test to pit his wits against Tony Mowbray. "Like everyone else at Cliftonville, I'm delighted we have been able to get this game confirmed," he said. "It's a match that we're already relishing and, wonderful an occasion though the European games against the likes of Copenhagen were, this will really be something else - and the fact it will be at Solitude only adds to it."

I remember reading somewhere that the then Celtic manager - Davy Hay would never bring a Celtic team back to Belfast after the events that happened that night.
Its about time Celtic did something for the fans over here in Ireland.

I was at that match. I was 11 years old at the time and was standing at the corner terrace between the bowling green end and the main stand. Most of the fans were watching (or taking part in) events off the pitch. I remember the adults around me at the time stating that the RUC should never have been at a game beween the Reds and Celtic. Tensions in the city at that time were running high. A nationalist youth, Sean Downes had been killed some days before the game, by a plastic bullet and many seen the RUC presence as provocation. Two incidents stick in my mind from that day. The Ruc baton charged fans in the Cage, which housed the most vocal of the Reds support including kids. Apparently the supporters were locked in at one end. As an 11 year old, I found it sickening and frightening to watch The second incident was equally sickening to watch. An RUC officer got stranded from his colleagues on the terrace opposite the main stand. He soon found himself surrounded by up to 30 fans who proceeded to give him a beating, before being baton charged by the RUC. I remember seeing the officer sitting on the terrace looking dazed. Those who attacked him made off with his hat and allegedly his firearm. I remember nothing about the game except for seeing Danny McGrain and knowing that Celtic won 4-0.

Well that basically sums it up. I wasnt at the game I was only 5. But my father was on a bus from Larne that went up and they still talk about that game till ths day.
You can joke about the police brutally etc, but in them days it did happen, there was no need whatsoever for them to have been there, particulary after the events which had lead up to the day. They battled outside the ground and plastic bullets were fired basically at free will.
Both supporters and police were as bad as each other that day.
Thankfully the PSNI will only be on traffic duty the next time round. It only takes some wee tosser to go to the ground to ruin a great exhibation game for us proper fans of both clubs.

No for once i was being serious. I didnt actually know about the game or what happened and have to admit i wondered about the need for the police presnce given the friendly nature of the game. Were they in from the start or did an incident bring them into the ground Or did someone really drop a burger

Were they in from the start or did an incident bring them into the ground Or did someone really drop a burger There was a wild rumour at the time at a fella from Larne started the whole thing moments after buying a cheese burger. Apparently he'd spent his last £2.50 on the splendid snack but he soon realised the donar behind the counter of the Chippy Cart had ran out of red sauce, relish and battered Mars Bars. He was distraught but things were made worse when the police officers could be seen clearly enjoying thier own array of food, chips, hot dogs, fish etc from their own police van, The S.S Chippy Cart. This young man, covered in grass stains after a days graft in the gardens of Larne couldn't take their gloating and started a riot!!!! Don't know if there's any truth in it TBH!! ;D ;D
